Dodge Viper : Performance Portfolio
Published in Paperback by Brooklands Book Ltd (November, 1998)
Average review score:

No Glitz Just Viper InformationThis book is just a rehash of many articles from car magazines. All the photos are in black and white, many pages appear to be very grainy photocopies. The quality of this book is poor. The only reason it gets my 2-stars is because of the topic not the presentation, not the photos and most certainly not the quality. Save you money for the high quality, hard cover Dodge Viper books out there.
Technical reviewMany great articles from the begining to 1998. If you're looking for performance and technical informations it's for you. If you want great color pics, go away.

Haynes Dodge Caravan & Plymouth Voyager 1996 thru 1999 (Haynes Repair Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Haynes Pub Group (15 May, 2000)
Average review score:

Very InaccurateYou would not be even able to change your air filter if you used this book. I tried to follow the instructions for changing the air filter on my 99 Grand Caravan, but I was left with frustration. This is just one inaccuracy I found. I would'nt be surprised if there are more.
Maybe the book is good for another year not for the 1999 Grand Caravan model.
A Good Repair Manual For Vehicle OwnersSave your money on Chilton. They do not hold near the information, clarity and in depth detail, thus VALUE, that Haynes Repair Manuals do. Having said that, I would like to address some complaints I've come across about both Haynes
and Chilton's Manuals.
1.) If your manual suggests at a point to seek professional input it is because MOST NON mechanics don't possess the skill or tools or shop equipment to perform a certain procedure (be it correctly or safely). The publishers' lawyer insisted on the "seek professional input" so as not to take on legal liability for an unqualified person attempting to perform a critical step in their car care. The reason is valid. You can injure yourself and damage your vehicle as well as render your
vehicle unsafe to be on the road.
2.) Prior to purchasing a repair manual, LOOK THROUGH IT. Almost every auto parts store in America sells Haynes and / or Chilton's. If the particular manual you need doesn't have the plastic removed, look for a manual that does and look through the sections. CAUTION most auto supply stores will get mad and make you buy anything you rip open. They're trying to sell information contained in the manual, not give it away. Some copies are USUALLY open and can be looked
at. Does the manual seem logical, good pictures? Thorough? Then CHANCES ARE that brand will be a good choice for your repair. Also READ the cover front & back thoroughly. It will tell you if special vehicles aren't covered (AWD, Alternate Fuel Vehicles, etc) Know what vehicle you have so you get the RIGHT manual. The correct year, make, model, engine size.
3.) If you do encounter a problem in the middle of a repair, it's possible that it is YOUR not doing something correctly. Not the tool, or the repair manual. Go away from the car, get lunch or a cold glass of lemonade, read through the manual. Even start again in the morning.
4.) As automobiles become more sophisticated, there is truly less and less that a vehicle owner can do him or herself. It is a fact, you will need to take your vehicle into a dealership or well equipped shop for more things. In addition, used oil and other fluids are difficult to dispose of. DO NOT THROW DOWN YOUR DRAIN OR BURY IN YOUR BACKYARD!!!. Tires, batteries all have special disposal needs.
5.) There are some people WHO ARE NOT MECHANICAL. Buy them books, audio / video equipment, ties for Christmas. NOT A WRENCH SET!
6.) Neither Haynes nor Chilton are Professional Shop Manuals (these are available for hundreds of dollars).
As for the particular manual for the Haynes (ASIN: 1563923580) Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country from years 1996 through 1999: This manual does NOT COVER All-Wheel Drive nor Alternative Fuel Models AND SAYS SO ON THE COVERS. Haynes breaks down into different sections each of the engine options (in this example: 4 cylinder,3.0 liter V6, 3.3 liter V6, and 3.8 V6) If you're say, changing an air filter, make sure you're looking at the right directions for the engine for the vehicle you have. The different engines have important items positioned in different locations and thus DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS for each item on each engine. You can even utilize Amazon "take a look inside" feature to check out if this manual is for you or not. .I checked it's description for changing wiper blades, oil and oil filters, air filters and general repairs and found it both accurate and easy to understand. I've been happy with Haynes manuals over the years and recommend all vehicle owners purchase one even if you don't expect to do any repair or service yourself. It helps to know the information, to be aware of how your car works and to talk in a reasonably intelligent manner (on your part anyway) when you take your vehicle in for service.

I'm happy with this purchase. And have been with every Haynes manual I've bought and used in the last 20 years.

Intimate Memories: The Autobiography of Mabel Dodge Luhan
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Mabel Dodge Luhan can speak for herself: The autobiographyWhat an outrage and disappointment, this super organized, sanitized act of academic hubris by Rudnick. I suggest you compare this text with the real thing - Edge of Taos Desert to see what I mean. The "Rudnick" autobiography was a total waste of money. I don't think Mabel Dodge Luhan was the kind of woman who would have take kindly to being "abridged." Nor should she have been, when she wrote prose as compelling, honest, sensual and spiritual as found in Edge of Taos Desert. I hope to find an unabridged autobiography. Meanwhile I'm mailing this "autobiography" back to Rudnick.
An extraordinary autobiography not to be missedIntimate memories is the autobiography of one of the most fascinating and influential women in artistic and intellectual circles of the US and Europe in the beginning of the 20th century. Mabel's writing is frank and engaging, and her story draws you in like an adventure novel. Her independent spirit and influence on writers, artists and intellectual luminaries of her time are awe-inspiring. This book is well-written and well edited, and I highly recommend it (and Im NOT just saying this because the editor is my mom)!

Michigan Ghost Towns: Of the Upper Peninsula
Published in Paperback by Thunder Bay Press (June, 1996)
Average review score:

Disappointment as a photography guideI was hoping to photograph some old ghost towns in the U.P. so I felt this book would help direct me to interesting sites. I hate to be so negative about a local topic but it did not even start to meet my expectations. The book is not easy to read even as interesting history. The book will not give you many details on how to find ghost town artifacts. Most of the book details the growth and death of towns. However, most of these are very short in length and are very dry in the telling. Many of the book's details leave off in the early 70's.
Informative and helpfulThis is a good, informative book which is primarily a listing of ghost towns existing in Michigan's misunderstood Upper Peninsula, but also includes pictures and interesting facts about most of the towns. It offers a pretty good history of the region.

Small--On Safety: The Designed-In Dangers of the Volkswagen.
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (September, 1972)
Average review score:

Don't accept it as well-represented fact. This is a very persuasive book in which Mr. Nader is trying to get you to take every single aircooled Volkswagen off of the road forever. There are solid facts about old Volkswagen's safety shortcomings. However, some of these appear to be missing exact facts(which worked in favor of Mr. Nader) The handling characteristics seem a bit exaggerated to me. I love how he goes on and on for pages about a defective gas cap. I think it is worthwhile for an aircooled Volkswagen owner to read this. I would advise, however, to take it with a grain of salt. As I think it is one-sided in many places and maybe some factors are not explained.
Plus how can a man hate cars so much yet never have been behind the wheel of one? :)
Plus how can a man hate cars so much yet never have been behind the wheel of one? :)
Information every VW owner should read. This is the book that did for the Volkswagen what "Unsafe At Any Speed" did for the Corvair. Ralph Nader had a significant role in the creation of this book, although he is not given author credit. It is a tell-all on the safety problems inherent in the design and engineering of the VW Beetle and Transporter. It is not good news for the VW enthusiast, which I am one, but it has caused me to drive it much more safely and carefully.

Checkered Years: A Bonanza Farm Diary, 1884-88 (Borealis Books)
Published in Paperback by Minnesota Historical Society (October, 1989)
Average review score:

A true picture of life on the Plains in the 1880sA friend loaned me The Checkered Years, and after reading it, I purchased two copies, one to give away and another to lend and ultimately to keep in my library. From the day-to-day writings of Mary Dodge Woodward, the reader begins to understand the central role of weather in the life of the early Dakota settlers - the awesome cold, wind, and heat; the blizzards, drought, and flood - all matter-of-factly but beautifully described in an unpretentious diary. The diary entries give a hint of the tremendous effort it took on Mary's part and that of her family to build up a large wheat farm, and along with that, the uncertainties she faced as a widow growing old. I wish the book had more background information in its introduction and more diary entries that, even though they probably would have seemed repetitive, may have given more focus to the people mentioned in the selections.

Chrysler Lhs, Concorde & New Yorker Dodge Intrepid Eagle Vision 1993 Thru 1997 All Models
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (June, 1998)
Average review score:

"...useful overall, but lacking in some regards."The Haynes Repair Manual for the 1993-1997 Chrysler LH cars is useful overall, but lacking in some regards. I bought this manual as a complete beginner to the mechanics of automobiles. I only know the primary basics, and only in minimal detail. I thought this book would be a great way to get to know my 1997 Dodge Intrepid in a more intimate way. To an extent, I now can. The manual does lack in a few areas though, mainly in description and illustration. While there is basic instruction for all the repair and maintenance jobs covered, detail is scant. The pictures and illustrations are sometimes marginally helpful, but are usually of poor quality. Sometimes the pictures seem to not even correspond to what the task at hand is.
The manual can also become frustrating when you cannot find a certain repair or other task you'd like to read about. For example, nowhere in this manual can I find information about the reverse light that is located in the center of the rear lights cluster on my Dodge Intrepid. Another instance of frustration occurred for me when I was reading about the wheel and tire sizes for my vehicle. The manual briefly discusses tire size, quote "All vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with metric-sized fiberglass or steel belted radial tires (see illustration)". Upon examining the illustration, where it gives a tire size of P185/80R13, confusion is easily encountered. After talking with other Intrepid owners, and e-mailing Haynes Publishing Group, I was able to determine that the illustrated tire size was just an example and was not intended to indicate the actual tire size of the vehicles covered in the manual. In case you're wondering, the actual stock tire size for the Dodge Intrepid is either P225/60R16 or P205/70R15, depending on the trim (base or ES). The manual doesn't say this though, and I have yet to see where it discusses wheel (rim) size at all.
So if you're planning to buy this manual, I hope I have given you a little insight on how it reads. In my opinion it was worth the money I spent on it, even if I found it a little lacking for someone of my skill level. More pictures and better detail, and maybe some color, would have made this a five star manual for me. As it is, I can give it a solid 3.5.

How about some color photos! This book has some neat shots of old power wagons, but the only color photo is the front cover. For $.. I expected color, I was a little disappointed with that but otherwise, if your into power wagons, a must have.

Haynes Dodge & Plymouth Neon 1995 thru 1999 (Haynes Repair Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Haynes Pub Group (15 May, 2000)

Well, OK...This book gets the bottom line done. I mean the conversion charts are good, and the information is all pretty much there, but I really had a hard time understanding some of the instructions. And they really should have done a better job editing. The myriad of typo's made it that much more difficult. But, that being said, the directions can get you through most minor repairs.
I got mine for 12 bucks at an auto parts store. That's about what it is worth to me.
